Good Health - Pretty Girls Make Graves

Editorial Reviews
If you combined all of the prior musical experience of Seattle outfit Pretty Girls Make Graves into a single person, you'd have, well, a really old guy. The thing about it is, all that musicianship comes through, even though Pretty Girls Make Graves play the sort of bouncy, poppy, energetic not-quite-punk that isn't usually associated with stellar musicianship. The deceptively simple song construction and hooky melodies cover a startling truth: Pretty Girls Make Graves kick butt as musicians. That raises the level of their material from a bunch of pleasant songs to a collection of tight, ear-catching music that wouldn't have sounded out of place on the High Fidelity soundtrack. It's a little too pretty to be punk, a little too raw to be pop, and a little too elegantly constructed to be rock & roll. And that makes it just about perfect. --Genevieve Williams

About the Artist
Seattle, WA is well known for its creative and self-supporting music community. All members of PGMG have done time in well-known and respected Seattle bands over the last five years. Singer and lyricist Andrea Zollo was in the highly regarded Death Wish Kids and Area 51, guitarist Jason Clark is still in Kill Sadie and Sharks Keep Moving, drummer Nick Dewitt and Nathan Thelen were both in The Beehive Vaults, and bassist Derek Fudesco was a founding member of the much loved Murder City Devils. While many musicians outgrow the rough and furious genre of punk, one thing that makes PGMG so special is that the musicians involved honed their playing for many years before returning to reinvent what they initially loved about punk music. So while they do have the music history to refer to, what the band is trying to accomplish with PGMG is much more. Always keeping sincerity and emotion as a primary force guiding their music, but combining that with stellar musicianship and exciting song writing, PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES are a punk band to watch.

Product Description
"Good Health" is the debut CD from this band, and there are more than a few good reasons for the buzz you are already hearing about them. An impressive pedigree (members of Murder City Devils, Death Wish Kids, Beehive Vaults, Kill Sadie), a live show embodying the honesty and intensity at the heart of punk rock, and a sound defying any limiting definitions you have for hardcore and emo are just a few of those reasons. Active for only a year, they have already garnered an impressive following. Singer Andrea Zollo's vocals and lyrics will soon have you filing her right next to Exene Cervenka and Penelope Houston as powerful and vital singers. Musically, the band explores territories similar to Fugazi, At the Drive In, and Sleater-Kinney.

If you like bands such as Sleater-kinney and (to a lesser degree) X-ray spex, then you'll also like this release, simple as that! This is quirky indie punk in the style of the aforementioned bands (again, the SK influence is far more evident...). The only major drawback regarding this record is its length! Clocking at just 27 minutes it simply feels to short... Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't stretch the songs because they are perfect in this form. Rather, I'd have added a few tracks (after all there are only 9 on this album). On the whole this is an extremely enjoyable album and I already saw it in a couple of "TOP 40 albums released in 2002" lists. Deservedly so, I might add...

Is it just me or does Matador kinda remind you of that big amorphous blob that merges with everything at the end of Akira. What's with them snatching up all of my favorite bands. They have enough talent, leave everyone else alone. Lookout did a much better job with this disc then Matador did with the follow up. I've had this CD for almost a year and I'm just getting around to the review now. This album is like a 26 minute adreniline rush with 1 minute break to cool down in the middle. I love the way ideas fly at you from every direction and by the time you latch on to something, theyve already thrown it out and are on to the next thing. Theres more hooks in this half hour of music than the rest of my music collection combined. I can't even begin to tell you how blown away I still am from this album.

If the scale would allow me to I would give this album three and a half stars, but it doesn't so I just wrote it in the title of the review. I hope no one minds. Anyway enough sillyness. This CD is pretty solid, there is nothing ground breaking here but pretty much every song is good. Pretty Girls Make Graves(what a horrible name) sounds like your basic girl fronted pop punk band with At the Drive In and Faraquet style riffs mixed in. The lead singer kind of sounds like the lead singer of Discount. Definitely recommended, but don't expect to be blown away.
